About South Boston
A very well-known and storied part of Boston, “Southie” as it’s commonly referred to, is about three square miles and approximately 30,000 residents making it a city of its own. Situated on a peninsula just east of I-93 and surrounded by the Boston Harbor, it is convenient to both north and south expressways, the Massachusetts Turnpike and Logan Airport. The neighborhood is also serviced by five MBTA bus lines that transport commuters to Downtown Boston, the Back Bay and three Red Line Stations, Broadway, Andrew Square or South Station, the later with Amtrak access as well as the Commuter Rail and several interstate bus lines. Cyclists and runners enjoy the three mile promenade from Carson Beach to Castle Island, a twenty-two acre waterfront National Historic Park, home to the Fort Independence. The surrounding beaches, Carson Beach, L Street Beach and Pleasure Bay offer swimming, fishing, bird watching and kite surfing with plenty of visitor parking.
Lately South Boston has seen tremendous growth in its population, as well as the neighborhood’s retail, food and drinking establishments (Foodie’s Urban Market, American Provisions, The Lincoln and The Paramount, to name a few.) In recent years many of the multi family properties have been completely renovated or demolished with more contemporary versions built in their place. Long known for it’s Irish-American heritage, the new demographic is a diverse population of young professionals and families cohabitating with generations of families who have called “Southie” home for decades.
