About Beacon Hill
Quintessentially Boston and loaded with history, Beacon Hill (“The Hill” as it is affectionately referred to by it’s residents) is perhaps the city’s most well known neighborhood. Situated on an actual hill adjacent to the Boston Common and anchored by the golden dome of the State House, this area is quite popular to residents and tourists alike. Still largely residential, the structures on Beacon Hill’s narrow cobblestone streets showcase several different styles of architecture while the Federal and Greek Revival styles were most popular during the first half of the nineteenth century and are the most predominant. In addition to the multi unit buildings, Beacon Hill is known for it’s gorgeous mansions tucked into the side streets of the neighborhood. Additionally, throughout the last 50 years, many stables and carriage houses have been converted into single family homes, loft spaces and studios. The Hill is bordered by the Charles River to the North, Boston Common to the South, Cambridge Street to the East, Arlington Street to the West. This neighborhood is home to many native Bostonian’s with family lineage dating back to the original settlers, some even say that the Boston accent is noticeably different in this neighborhood and the people who have called it home for generations. Through the center of the neighborhood, or the “Flat of the Hill”, runs Charles Street which is lined with adorable clothing, antique + gift shops, popular restaurants and the gourmet grocery that Julia Child made famous, Savenor’s.
