About North End / Waterfront
Located on Boston’s Waterfront, bordered by Government Center and the Financial District, the North End has always been a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, all drawn to the rows of authentic Italian restaurants, and fascinated by the history that lines the same streets. Since the completion of the Big Dig in 2007, this famed neighborhood has become much more accessible from many other popular visitor attractions in the city including Fanueil Hall, The New England Aquarium, and the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Long known for it’s Italian heritage, in the last decades the resident demographic has become more young professional and less multi-generational Italian. That is not to say that you won’t hear plenty of Italian spoken in the streets, or pass by a couple of “old-timers” enjoying a game of chess in lawn chairs on the sidewalks. The main corridors of the North End are Hanover Street, Salem Street and Commercial Street, all best travelled by foot. Go off the beaten path in the North End, where you’ll find the more quaint version of the area along with the friendliest people and the best food. While you stroll, instead of waiting in line at Mike’s or Modern Pastry, stop by Bova’s on the corner of Salem and Prince. Open 24 hours a day, their canoli* are just as good (if not better than) the two rivalrous legends of Hanover Street and the line is much shorter. (*Italian language tip: Canoli is the plural of Canolo.)
Recently, the neighborhood has expanded into the surrounding area known as the Bulfinch Triangle. With this expansion, the neighborhood has added several high rise luxury rental and condo buildings, including The Sudbury, Lovejoy Wharf, Hub50House, and One Canal, to name a few. The area is well known for it’s outstanding public transportation options, and now a new water taxi service to and from the Seaport District is in full operation for commuters.
